Consulting Game

Heather Keath, The National Journal

Deborah Rosenblum, 40, has departed the Defense Department to become a vice president with The Cohen Group, a strategic-consulting firm headed by former Defense Secretary William Cohen.

Rosenblum converted her Presidential Management Internship position into a career civilian slot at Defense 12 years ago, becoming a specialist on nuclear issues in the office of the undersecretary for policy. From there, she went on to become a part of the counter-proliferation staff, and then joined the U.S. negotiating team for the nuclear Agreed Framework with North Korea. Rosenblum later directed three different Defense branches in succession: peacekeeping operations, humanitarian affairs, and counternarcotics. She ended up as the deputy of the transition team creating a homeland security organization within the Defense Department. "I'm a big proponent of public service," she says, adding that she hopes to go back into government at a future date. But for now, she says, "this is a very good opportunity in working with Secretary Cohen here in the private sector, implementing programs in support of public policies."
