Top November November 11-12, 2004 Secretary William Cohen delivered a keynote address on the topic of Japan-U.S. Exchange of Defense Technology and Equipment at the 4th Japan-U.S. Strategy Conference hosted by the Congressional National Security Study Group in Tokyo. While in Tokyo, he also discussed defense and security issues with Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda, Defense Minister Yoshinori Ohno and other House of Representative members.October October 18, 2004Secretary Cohen hosted newly arrived Indian Ambassador Ronen Sen for a defense roundtable discussion with key US defense industrial representatives . Industry representatives discussed Indian defense procurement priorities and opportunities for technology cooperation. October 12, 2004 Secretary Cohen hosted visiting Israeli Ministry of Defense Director General Amos Yaron for meetings with representatives of US companies interested in doing business in Israel. Yaron discussed the security situation between Israel and the Palestinians and the climate for increased business investment and opportunity. Yaron was visiting Washington for the bi-annual US-Israel Joint Political Military Group talks that are held between the US and Israeli governments. October 3-5, 2004 Secretary Cohen chaired the US-Taiwan Business Council's 3rd Annual Defense Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Associate Vice President Danny Sebright accompanied Secretary Cohen to the event which provided an opportunity for senior Taiwanese defense leaders to meet with representatives of US and European defense companies. Deputy Undersecretary of Defense Richard Lawless and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Randy Schriver were key note speakers at the conference.September September 15, 2004 The Cohen Group and the U.S. Institute for Peace (USIP) co-hosted a reception in honor of 50 Iraqi government officials who were in Washington for a training program led by USIP. The evening brought together people from the executive and legislative branches, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, the diplomatic corps and the media. Secretary William Cohen, USIP President Richard Solomon, Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, and Her Excellency Rend Al-Rahim of the Iraqi Embassy delivered welcoming remarks. The Iraqi delegation included officials from the Ministries of Justice, Foreign Affairs, Planning, Finances and the Interior.July July 20, 2004 At the dinner, Aviation Week and the Society of British Aerospace Companies awarded Lord George Robertson with the 15th Biennial John Curtis Sword Award at the the annual Farnborough Airshow, in recognition of his lifetime contributions toward strengthening the bonds of cooperation and friendship in the aviation and aerospace industries on both sides of the Atlantic. Upon accepting the award, Lord Robertson called for strengthened trans-Atlantic relations and cooperation. Lord Robertson's keynote address was attended by some 800 industry and government officials from around the globe. June June 25-27, 2004Secretary William Cohen and Senator Mikhail Margelov, Member of the Russian Federation's Council of Federation, co-hosted the first bilateral U.S.-Russian discussions under the auspices of The Leaders Project, a non-profit organization chaired by Secretary Cohen. The conference in Veliky Novgorod, Russia brought together successor generation leaders from business, government, military, civic society organizations and the media for a discussion of security, economic and other concerns shared by both societies. June 16, 2004 Ambassador Jüri Luik, former Minister of Defense, Foreign Affairs and Parliamentarian of the Republic of Estonia, presented General Joseph Ralston with the Decoration of the Republic of Estonia as designated by the President of the Republic, His Excellency Arnold Rüütel. Upon receiving the decoration, General Ralston thanked the government and people of Estonia for their commitment to the North Atlantic Alliance.May May 20, 2004 The Foreign Press Center, an agency of the U.S. Department of State, hosted a press briefing led by Secretary William Cohen, Lord George Robertson and General Ralston. The group addressed questions from the international press on the future of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, developments in Iraq, U.S.-European relations and other topical issues. May 11, 2004 Secretary William Cohen and General Joseph Ralston welcomed H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al Nahyan, Deputy Crown Prince of the United Arab Emirates, and Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Information and Culture to Washington. The group exchanged views on the future of U.S.-UAE relations and Gulf affairs, joined by members of Congress, the Administration, the media and the business community.May 3, 2004 Former Japanese State Minister for Defense and current Policy Director of the Liberal Democratic Party Fukushiro Nugaka was the guest of honor at an event hosted by Secretary William Cohen. Minister Nukaga led a delegation of Diet members to Washington under the auspices of the National Security Research Group, of which he is chairman. Secretary Cohen and Minister Nukaga invited select officials from the Administration, the Hill, the media and the business community to hear the delegation's candid thoughts on the strength of U.S.-Japan relationship and Japan's economic prospects. March March 29, 2004 Lord George Robertson, former Minister of Defense of the United Kingdom and Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, has joined The Cohen Group as Senior Counselor. The Honorable Adrian Nastase, Prime MInister of Romania, presented General Joseph Ralston with the Order of the State of Romania, one of the country's highest honors. Upon receiving his award, General Ralston thanked the Government and people of Romania for their committment to the North Atlantic alliance and for their partnership in the war on terror.March 23, 2004 Secretary William Cohen testified before the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (also known as the 9-11 Commission), an independent, bipartisan commission created by congressional legislation and the signature of President Bush to prepare a full and complete account of the circumstances surrounding the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Secretary Cohen's submitted statement and as-delivered statement before the Commission are available.March 12, 2004 Secretary Cohen delivered the keynote address at the Army Engineer Association's executive seminar, titled Iraq Reconstruction Contracting: Practical & Legal Issues. February February 6-8, 2004Mr. Gebhard and Secretary Cohen attended the annual Conference on International Security in Munich, Germany, also known as Wehrkunde, for a series of discussions on trends and develoments in global security. Also in attendance were senior defense and foreign policy leaders from Europe, Russia, India and Pakistan. February 3, 2004 Senator Mikhail Margelov, Chairman of the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the Council of Federation (Upper House of Parliament) of Russia, was the guest of honor at an event hosted by Secretary William Cohen in Washington. Senator Margelov shared his views on the upcoming Russian Presidential election and on U.S.-Russian relations with a gathering that included members of Congress, the Administration and the business community. January January 22, 2004Secretary William Cohen hosted a policy discussion anchored by U.S. Export-Import Bank Chairman Phil Merrill.
