Secretary Cohen suggested reforms in corporate governance and government policy that are needed to revitalize the Korean economy. November November 30, 2001The Cohen Group's Vice President, Paul R.S. Gebhard, addressed a European Union conference of government and non-government policy experts in Brussels, Belgium about terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. During his visit, Mr. Gephard also met with NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson and the U.S. Ambassador to NATO, Nicholas Burns. November 19, 2001 Katie Couric of NBC's Today Show interviewed Secretary Cohen about the progress of the war on terrorism. Secretary Cohen became a World Affairs Analyst for NBC and MSNBC in November. November 19, 2001 Secretary Cohen joined former Vice President Dan Quayle for a dinner hosted in honor of Philippine President Gloria Arroyo during her official visit to Washington. During her visit, President Bush pledged to support counter-terrorism efforts in the Philippines. October October 29 - November 8 Secretary Cohen completed his first private visit to Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea and Japan with Messrs. Bodner and Park. The group discussed the political and economic environment for foreign investment with senior government and business leaders, including Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian (pictured at left), Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew, and the defense ministers of Japan and South Korea.October 24, 2001 Senior Associate H.K. Park conducted a Washington Post on-line interview about U.S. efforts to respond to domestic terrorism involving chemical, biological and nuclear weapons. Read the interview. October 24 - November 8 Isto?/b>, a weekly Brazilian news magazine, interviewed Secretary Cohen about his visit to Brazil and the U.S. reaction to the terrorist attacks. Cohen explained that "All of the countries have something to lose in this war. This was not an isolated attack against the towers of American commerce, but an attack against the towers of world commerce, against all open and free societies." Click here for the full article.October 22 - 24, 2001 Secretary Cohen, Mr. Bodner and Mr. Park visited Brazil to meet with Defense Minister Geraldo Quintao, Foreign Minister Celso Lafer, and senior trade officials. While in Brasilia, Secretary Cohen spoke to a trade conference hosted by the Brazilian House of Representatives about impact of the Free Trade Area of the Americas for North and South America. He also addressed a business conference in Sao Paolo hosted by BrasilInvest, an international merchant bank. October 15, 2001 Vice President and General Counsel Mara Rudman spoke about the War Powers Resolution and the respective roles of the executive and legislative branches in decisions to send the U.S. military into combat at a roundtable discussion hosted by former Congressman Lee Hamilton at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC. October 11, 2001 Secretary Cohen joined President George Bush and Defense Secretary Rumsfeld at a Pentagon memorial service to honor those who died at there on September 11. October 1, 2001 Since the September attacks, Senior Associate H.K. Park has lectured at Georgetown University and other fora about the U.S. government's efforts to prepare for and respond to domestic terrorism involving biological, chemical and nuclear weapons. He has also been quoted in several national newspapers and one Korean newspaper. September September 2001Secretary Cohen is interviewed by numerous television, radio and print media about his views on the American response to terrorism and the strategic and economic implications for the U.S. and the world. September 12, 2001 Following the terrorist attacks in the United States, Secretary Cohen wrote an op-ed entitled, "American Holy War" for The Washington Post. He asserted that "America must embark on its own holy war — not one driven by hatred or fueled by blood but grounded in our commitment to freedom, tolerance and the rule of law..." Read the op-ed. September 5, 2001 "National Secrets Too Frequently Told" In an essay written for The New York Times, Secretary Cohen discussed the problem of government officials leaking our national secrets. The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence is examining legislation to penalize any public official who intentionally discloses classified information to an unauthorized person. Secretary Cohen served as the Vice Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence for ten years. Read the essay. September 5, 2001 Ms. Mara Rudman, formerly the Chief of Staff of the National Security Council under President Clinton joined The Cohen Group as a Vice President and General Counsel. September 1, 2001 Secretary Cohen accepted an invitation from the Center for Strategic and International Studies to join senior business leaders and former policy makers in a review of transatlantic trade. The Commission on Transatlantic Security and Industrial Cooperation in the 21st Century will examine past and current examples of successful transatlantic defense industrial cooperation and determine what new incentives and reforms can be instituted to enable other successful ventures to take place in the future. September 1, 2001 Washington Business Forward,a business magazine with a circulation of 40,000, profiled The Cohen Group for its September, 2001 cover story. The article focused on the burgeoning field of international strategic consulting and described Secretary Cohen as one of "Washington's newest class of entrepreneurs."August August 30, 2001Secretary Cohen and Henry Kissinger were featured guests on Wolf Blitzer Reports discussing the question of whether the recent Israeli attacks on Palestinian military leaders constitutes preventive self-defense or assassination, and the larger implications for U.S. relations in the Middle East. August 11-14, 2001 Secretary Cohen moderated a discussion on e-government at the Empower America Summer Retreat, an annual gathering of influential thinkers and entrepreneurs. The panel of CEOs and government officials focused on the efficiencies and cost-cutting potential through the government's use of the Internet. They also discussed specific problems related to e-government, such as the "digital divide," on-line security, and the recent decline of e-commerce. Along with Jack Kemp and Bill Bennett, Secretary Cohen is one of the co-directors of Empower America. July July 27, 2001Secretary Cohen spoke to a over 20 top military officials from the Near East, North Africa, and South Asia at the Near East-South Asia Center for Strategic Studies in Washington, DC. He discussed the Center's importance in bringing military planners from different countries together so that in times of crisis, they can cooperate with U.S. forces. Earlier that morning, Mr. Bodner spoke to the same group about the evolution of the national missile defense plan. July 25, 2001 Mr. Bodner delivered a speech to American and German journalists participating in the George Marshall Fund exchange program. His remarks focused on recent developments in transatlantic relations and the national missile defense. July 16, 2001 Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar hosted a lunch for Secretary Cohen, Mr. Gebhard and Mr. Park in Washington, DC to discuss U.S.-Malaysian relations. As a U.S. Senator, Secretary Cohen launched the Pacific Dialogue, an annual forum in which select finance, commerce, trade, telecommunications and foreign ministers, central bankers, and other political and economic leaders from throughout East Asia and the U.S. could privately gather to discuss future developments in the region. July 15, 2001 Secretary Cohen accepted an invitation to join the Board of Advisors of the BrazilInvest Group, a merchant bank based in Sao Paolo, Brazil with a network of affiliate banks in 16 countries, including Japan, Germany and the United States. July 9, 2001 Secretary Cohen accepted an invitation to join the Bretton Woods Committee, a non-profit, public education group that champions multilateral economic cooperation through the World Bank, IMF and WTO. July 6, 2001 The primary business newspaper in South Korea, the Maeil Business Newspaper, profiled The Cohen Group in two separate articles. Secretary Cohen commented on his support for an aid package for South Korea during the 1997 Korean foreign exchange crisis: "During the course of the Korean economic adversity, I attended a Congressional banking committee hearing. I am probably the first Secretary of Defense to attend such a meeting. I emphasized to the committee members that the decision should not be sorely based on economic impact, but should be also viewed in the light of national security linkage to our national interest." June 26, 2001 Paul Gebhard, a Special Assistant to U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, joined The Cohen Group as a Vice President. Mr. Gebhard is an expert on procurement and export control matters, and served as a key diplomat at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. See his bio. June 19, 2001 Navigating Washington — and the World — Secretary Cohen and Presidential Advisor E. Floyd Kvamme discussed current science and technology trends and emerging government policies affecting export controls, information security, and other topics of specific interest to the Silicon Valley business community, in addition to business opportunities in Asia, Europe and Latin America. President Bush recently appointed Mr. E. Floyd Kvamme to be the Co-Chair of the President's Committee of Advisors on Science & Technology. June 15, 2001 Appearing on "Dr. Shavers On Radio," Secretary Cohen dicussed information security and the vulnerablity of American companies to state-sponsored corporate espionage. "Dr. Shavers On Radio," a weekly feature on AM Business Radio in Washington, DC, has a listening audience of 400,000. June 14, 2001 Appearing on CNN's Lou Dobbs Moneyline, Secretary Cohen commented on President Bush's first meeting with NATO and European leaders and the European Commission's review of General Electric's proposed acquisition of Honeywell.One month after returning to CNN, Lou Dobbs invited Secretary Cohen to appear on his popular Moneyline program every Tuesday night to provide regular insights into political and economic developments in the United States and in foreign capitals, and assess their implications for business. June 12, 2001 Secretary Cohen and Mr. Park met Romanian Minister of Defense Ioan Mircea Pascu during his official visit to the United States for discussions with senior Bush administration officials. June 12, 2001 Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and Minister of Trade and Industry George Yeo hosted a lunch for Secretary Cohen and Mr. Bodner during his official visit to Washington, DC. to meet with President Bush. June 5, 2001 World Bank initiatives around the world were the focus of a meeting among Secretary Cohen, Mr. Bodner and Mr. James Wolfensohn, President of the World Bank in Washington, DC. Wolfensohn was unanimously reappointed to a second five-year term as president beginning June 2000. He is the third president in World Bank history to serve a second term. June 3, 2001 Following the recent decision by Senator Jeffords to leave the Republican Party, The Washington Post published an Op-Ed by Secretary Cohen entitled "Embracing A Diverse Party," which discussed the implications for the Republican Party. Secretary Cohen's three terms as a Republican Senator from Maine overlapped with Senator Jeffords's tenure. When President Clinton asked Secretary Cohen, a Republican, to lead the Department of Defense in 1997, he became the first elected official in modern U.S. history to serve in the cabinet of an opposing political party. May May 24-29, 2001Secretary Cohen and Mr. Bodner attended a NATO conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, along with defense minsters from Estonia, Sweden, Portugal, Greece, Austria, Canada, and Bulgaria. Following the conference, they traveled to Paris, Amsterdam and Madrid to meet with senior foreign leaders including King Juan Carlos of Spain. May 15, 2001 Secretary Cohen was elected to the NASDAQ board of directors and was welcomed by Chairman Frank Zarb in his New York headquarters.
May 12, 2001 Secretary Cohen and Mr. Park met with Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo following his discussions with Bush administration officials in Washington, DC. President Obasanjo, a retired three-star general, is Nigeria's first democratically elected leader. Secretary Cohen met him previously at his Presidential Office in Abuja in April 2000 and hosted him at the Pentagon in March 1999 to discuss bilateral security relations. May 10-11, 2001 The Cohen Group attended Empower America's spring conference with keynote speaker Vice President Richard Cheney, who discussed the work of his task force on energy policy. Secretary Cohen spoke about globalization and its positive and negative impacts upon American technology companies. Secretary Cohen recently joined Jack Kemp, William Bennett, Jeane Kirkpatrick and Vin Weber as a co-director of Empower America. May 9, 2001 Secretary Cohen accepted an invitation from former CIA and FBI Director William Webster to participate in a bipartisan government panel that will examine ways to prevent espionage at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Other panel members include Clifford Alexander, Griffin Bell, Robert Fiske, Thomas Foley, and Carla Hills. May 6, 2001 BBC World Radio interviewed Secretary Cohen about missile defense and the threat of rogue nations. May 1, 2001 CBS Evening News interviewed Secretary Cohen about President Bush's visit to the National Defense University in Washington, DC where he outlined plans for a National Missile Defense. April April 30, 2001National Public Radio interviewed Mr. Bodner for its "Forum" program. Topics ranged from the role of the Secretary of Defense in foreign policy, the defense budget, missile defense, and U.S. war strategy. April 27, 2001 The Hidaka Report, a television journal with 4 million viewers in Japan, interviewed Secretary Cohen about recent developments in the U.S.-China relationship and the role of the United States as a stabilizing influence in the region.April 26, 2001 The Cohen Group and Thayer Capital Partners established a strategic partnership, whereby Thayer will leverage the talents and resources of The Cohen Group to assist in transaction sourcing and investment evaluation on a global basis. Secretary Cohen also became Vice Chairman of Thayer's Board of Advisors, which includes Jack Kemp, Vernon Jordan, Frank Zarb, Dan Altobello and Jim Robinson. April 25, 2001 The Houston World Affairs Council in Texas hosted Secretary Cohen for a luncheon discussion about recent developments in U.S. - China relations. He spoke to an audience of 440 executives from the energy and legal communities about the implications of government tensions for businessmen and diplomats alike. While in Houston, Fox News interviewed Secretary Cohen about the proposed arms sales to Taiwan. April 23, 2001 Mr. Bodner was a guest on National Public Radio's "Talk of the Nation" where he discussed cyberattacks against the U.S. military and American businesses, and efforts underway to prevent and mitigate such attacks. April 20, 2001 Secretary Cohen delivered an address to an audience of 560 students, ROTC cadets, faculty and alumni at Davidson College in Davidson, NC. Hosted by the Dean Rusk Program in International Studies, his remarks focused on the importance of foreign studies programs in preparing America's future leaders for an increasingly complex world. April 5 - 12, 2001 CNN, BBC, NBC, MSNBC, ABC, Fox News, AP and Larry King Live interviewed Secretary Cohen about the implications of the accidental collision of a U.S. surveillance plane with a Chinese jet fighter in international airspace. Secretary Cohen last met with Chinese President Jiang Zemin at his Beijing residence in July 2000 to discuss bilateral relations. April 2 - 4, 2001 "Roundtable on Strategy of Leadership in the 21st Century" - Secretary Cohen discussed the future European political landscape with former Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov and former Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis at The Economist Conference in Athens, Greece. Secretary Cohen and Mr. Tyrer met separately with Greek cabinet officials and attended two separate events in honor of former U.S. President George H.W. Bush. March March 24, 2001Fox News Live interviewed Secretary Cohen about the recent visit of Chinese Vice Premier Qian Qichen and its implications for U.S. - Chinese relations in addition to the U.S. response to an FBI employee accused of spying for Russia. March 22, 2001 Secretary Cohen spoke to 3000 students, faculty members and alumni of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, VA about the national security priorities of the next two decades. Also attending were 600 members of the Corps of Cadets. March 22, 2001 Mr. Bodner delivered a speech to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington, DC think tank, on U.S. efforts to monitor and restrict the capabilities of foreign satellites. March 19, 2001 Secretary Cohen discussed the relationship between national security and energy security while addressing 1100 members of the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association in New Orleans, LA. He noted that the U.S. economy is particularly vulnerable because of its reliance on Gulf oil, and suggested alternative policies to lessen American dependence. March 14, 2001 Secretary Cohen spoke to the board of the National Bureau of Asian Research in Washington, DC about the confluence of security and economic interests in the Asia-Pacific region.He asserted that, "As the people of China become more prosperous, and the middle class grows, it will seek a greater voice in governing. An emerging, stock-owning Chinese middle class with greater commercial and intellectual contact with the world will do more to keep Asia peaceful, stable, prosperous and-eventually — democratic." March 8, 2001 Secretary Cohen delivered the inaugural address of the "Robert J. Pelosky Distinguished Speaker Series" at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. He spoke to an audience comprised of 250 graduate students, faculty and alumni about the making of national security policy and emerging threats to the United States. He warned that, "The supremacy of U.S. military power on the battlefield has prompted adversaries to pursue unconventional, or asymmetric warfare against us. In the coming years, we may see more effective cyber attacks against the nervous system of our Nation — such as the disabling of our air traffic control system, our power grid, or even our banking system." March 7, 2001 Secretary Cohen chaired the selection panel for the Council on Foreign Relations Military Fellows program in New York. This prestigious program enables senior military officers to interact with political, business, and academic leaders. Secretary Cohen is a current member of the Council on Foreign Relations and he previously chaired its Middle East Study Group when he was a U.S. Senator. February February 26, 2001Secretary Cohen joined former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Congresswoman Susan Molinari, former White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta, and former Health and Human Services Secretary Louis Sullivan to discuss the policy implications of the recent U.S. election. Fleishman-Hillard, Washington, D.C. hosted the roundtable, dubbed "Battleground 2001." The Chairman and CEO of Fleishman-Hillard, John Graham, moderated the event, which drew a crowd of several hundred participants. February 25, 2001 Secretary Cohen appeared on CBS "Face the Nation" with Senator Shelby, Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, to discuss the ongoing FBI espionage case and remedies. February 2 - 4, 2001 Secretary Cohen and Mr. Bodner attended the Wehrkunde Conference on Security Policy in Munich, Germany with current U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and the defense ministers of 17 other NATO Allies. For four decades, the annual Wehrkunde Conference has been an informal forum to strengthen dialogue and understanding among NATO Allies. U.S. Senators Jon Kyl and Joe Lieberman also attended. February 2001 Througout the month, The Cohen Group met cabinet officials representing countries in Europe, Asia, the Gulf and Latin America to discuss the current political climate in the United States and economic and political trends abroad.
