Prior to joining The Cohen Group, Mr. Pitsuwan worked at JP Morgan, where he focused on Islamic finance and conducted a study on the feasibility of refinancing traditional corporate debt with Islamic bonds. His secondary focus was the ethanol and sugar industry, for which he tracked and analyzed market trends. Before that, he was at the legal and protection unit of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) where he assisted lawyers in determining the status of potential refugees and stateless individuals. Mr. Pitsuwan was involved with disaster relief efforts on the ground after Cyclone Nargis hit Burma in 2008 and after a tsunami devastated large parts of Southeast Asia in 2004. In Burma, he recruited volunteers and coordinated international NGOs and ASEAN government officials to channel aid for victims. He also led a group of volunteers from the United States to carry out reconstruction efforts in the affected parts of Thailand and worked at the Washington office of Kenan Institute Asia, which funded long-term rebuilding programs. For several years, with support from the Asia Foundation, the Peace Corps, and the Fulbright Program, Mr. Pitsuwan has worked as a project manager for a Thai NGO focused on improving the quality of education for underprivileged children. Mr. Pitsuwan received a B.Sc. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University (Phi Beta Kappa). His thesis discussed the dynamics and power-play among the littoral states in maintaining maritime security in the Straits of Malacca. He was named the University’s outstanding student on Asia. Mr. Pitsuwan has spent time at the American University in Cairo studying Islamic art and philosophy. He is fluent in Thai and has knowledge of Arabic.
